Times Change

Hey guys, it’s been awhile – and to smack down any sass, no, I haven’t been on vacation.

Keeping away from BugReport or a bit has allowed me to decompress a little. I’ve had a little more time to breathe, psychologically, and it’s helped me to realize a couple things about where I want to go next – creatively.

For one – and this is hard to say – I am taking an extended hiatus from BugReport. That is, I’m leaving it on a high note with the intention of coming back to it at an undetermined time in the future. It was fun, and I still love the art and my characters, but it’s just too stressful to come up with punchlines – one after the other – while juggling everything else in life. It’s not the type of storytelling that comes to me without arduous thought (there is a type of storytelling that flows out of me with little effort, but I’ll get into that in a second), and I found myself beating myself up over how to tell a new joke every week. My heart just wasn’t in it; all the while, I wanted to do a different kind of fiction with those characters.

So, I guess this is the good news: I’m starting to work on a new weekly comic, this one being a space odyssey. The best way I can explain it is to say that’s it’s sort of like taking Blade Runner and smushing it into an Orson Scott Card book. I have a crazy-weird art style in the works for it, and a cool story I want to get out there. Serious fiction comes much easier to me than sitcom writing, and as Lee Cherolis has said of me in the past, “You have a flair for the dramatic.”

So, this new thing should be spinning up around Christmas. Wulflorne is still in swing, and I’m still cranking away at the scripts. The BugReport site will remain up and running; who knows? I might still throw strips up on it from time to time.
